EDEN GARDENS JOB DESCRIPTION - Culinary Care Partner - Cook REPORTS TO: Support Services Manager Department: Support Services / Food Services All team members at Eden Gardens embrace the Eden Philosophy of Care to create a Human Habitat were life is worth living, antidotes to the three plagues are abundant, all partners are growing and relationships flourish. Job Summary: Of all the rituals we human beings have created in our lives, sharing good food with good friends and family is one of the most important, memorable and enduring. As a culinary care partner - cook, you play a pivotal role in making sure that food is prepared and served with care and appeals to all the senses. You will accomplish this by being passionate about cooking and coming up with tasty dishes that reflect the preferences of the Elders, with a few surprises thrown in for variety and spontaneity. The duties are, but not limited to: Preparing and serving food according to menus that meet the preferences of the Elders and making sure that adjustments are made in recipe yields according to staff requests, guests, and special catering functions. Cooking a variety of foods using various methods such as roasting, frying, grilling, steaming, poaching, boiling and baking. Seasoning a variety foods with herbs and spices, and taste testing to ensure palatability and proper temperature and adjusting accordingly. Carving and portioning foods to ensure yield meets assigned quantities required for the various neighbourhoods and other catered events. Preparing any foods for therapeutic diets, nourishments and those requiring texture modifications ie.) cut-up, minced, puree. Planning cooking schedules that produce food of the highest quality with the optimal retention of nutritional value and appearance and that is ready to be served on time. Understands and follows food safe practices including, but not limited to, temperature control, using approved cleaning methods, demonstrating good hand and body hygiene. Developing relationships with the Elders to ensure that foods and beverages of their choosing are readily available as desired. This would be met by preparing and serving beverages and food items such as snacks, sandwiches, tea, coffee, juice, toast and ensuring the country kitchens are stocked accordingly. Engaging Elders, families, children and other care partners in all aspects of the meal experience, helping everyone become well-known to each other. Making sure dishes, utensils and pots and pans are washed and sanitized and put away until next use. Be available to help to put away delivered supplies according to established procedures. Be available to serve meals in the neighbourhoods to Elders and guests so that their nutritional desires can be met throughout the day. Creating a safe work area for care partners, Elders, families and visitors by keeping areas organized and free of obstructions. Reports on equipment and items in need of repair via identified procedures. Collaborating with the neighbourhood team to plan and participate in special celebrations and spontaneous events. Collaborates with and provides leadership and direction to fellow culinary care partners - homemakers. Be available to help with other related duties. Complete safety related training as required Reports potential or actual safety concerns; contributes to and follows safe TEAM MEMBER ROLE: As a member of our team, your other roles will include: Growing friendships; Understanding the Domains of Well-Being and working with the team to bring them to life daily Being trustworthy Educating, advocating, and supporting our culture change efforts Keeping the Elders preferences and needs at the center of all your decisions, conversations, and actions Being an advocate for people, as they move in and out of the home, to help them become well-known as quickly as possible Showing people what it means to genuinely care for others Sharing your unique skill set to help others grow Collaborating with the neighborhood care partner team to create a home where people are safe, respected, and comfortable; Helping people become well-known in the neighborhood and Actively participating in neighborhood Learning Circles, meetings and events. Awareness and understanding of the well-being Strategies for this organization. Education, Experience Requirements: Education, Training and other requirements Graduation from a recognized 12-month program in cooking or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Food Safe Level 1 certification (current and valid) Personal skills: Speak, read and write the English language in an understandable manner Able to organize your work day Able to work collaboratively and get along with all care partners, Elders, families, and guests Able to operate related food services equipment (dishwashers, toasters, microwave, coffeemakers, etc.) Knowledge of all applicable regulations and guidelines. Hospitality skills, so that new Elders rooms are prepared to enable them to feel welcome and at home as soon as possible Personal skills, traits, and a desire to care for people who are ill, disabled, or living with dementia and to work with families, and other care partners Being responsive to the needs of the Elders, families, and your peers by keeping your promises Being a good steward of our environment and resources, making the neighborhood a place we can all be proud of, and assuring we have the resources we need Being a companion, balance giving and receiving for all, and be spontaneous at times A sense of humor Respect for everyone you have contact with Flexibility and a willingness to modify role duties for the overall good of the community and the Elders OTHER: Must be physically and mentally fit for the work environment Pass a Criminal Record Check upon hiring and every 4 - 5 years thereafter Must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 Must either receive annual flu vaccine, or wear appropriate PPE as prescribe by the PHO for the recommended flu season Willing to volunteer as an Ambassador for an assigned community, assisting with meal times and liaison ideas, compliments and concerns with the leadership team Participate in staff functions and events as requested and/or appropriate Physical Demands The ability to move freely about, lift or push up to 50 lbs, stoop, kneel and reach.
