Senior School Counsellor 
Senior School Counsellor Faculty - Duncan, British Columbia Queen Margaret's School is accepting applications for a Senior School Counsellor to join our faculty, beginning August 26, 2019. This is a 1.0 FTE position. The School Counsellor is an integral member of the Senior School whose primary role is to increase student well-being. This position reports to the Senior School Principal. By providing appropriate programming in classes, leading individual and small group counselling sessions, and serving as a case manager for students requiring additional support internally and outside school, the Senior School Counsellor will contribute to the success of all students. The candidate must possess or be eligible for teacher certification through the BC Ministry of Education Teacher Regulation Branch. Teacher Counsellors interested in joining Queen Margaret's School community must embrace the ethos of an independent school education, develop positive relationships with all community members, and contribute to a collaborative learning community. Dedicated time for collaborating with a team to design and implement cross-curricular units of study throughout the year is provided. Applications must include proof of teacher certification and degrees obtained. Responsibilities: Adhere to the ethical standards of the school counselling profession and practice in accordance with confidentiality, child protection/child abuse, and other School and regulatory policies that relate to students and families Teach classes on topics such as bullying, drug abuse, mindfulness, conflict resolution, and resilience across Grades 8-12. Promote personal and social development appropriate to developmental stages Counsel students, their families and the student community to foster growth in the students' self esteem, individual responsibility, and in skills such as decision-making and social skills Ameliorate factors which may precipitate problems for students Provide appropriate interventions to assist students with school-related problems and issues Maintain written records for all casework Facilitate the development of IEPs and support plans for students with moderate behavioural/emotional challenges Enhance students' educational achievement through goal setting, as well as the promotion of effective work and study habits Monitor the progress of students working on goals on a regular basis and document progress Collaborate with teacher colleagues to support a student-centered learning environment Develop strategies with teacher, administrators and parents to help students succeed Be a role model for students Model the core values of the school Lead co-curricular assignments with enthusiasm Qualifications: The following are requirements for this position: Graduate of a recognized B.Ed. program BC Ministry of Education Teacher Regulation Branch certification (or eligibility for BC certification) A Master's degree recognized by the BC Teacher Qualification Service (TQS) in counselling, psychology, or a related discipline with a focus in counselling. Understanding of British Columbia s curriculum and objectives of competency-based education Experience working with senior school students (Grades 8-12) Excellent working knowledge of current effective individual and group counselling processes Crisis management skills Excellent record-keeping skills Strong organizational and communication skills with a proven ability to communicate and develop relationships with a wide array of stakeholders (students, parents, teacher colleagues, community members, etc. Commitment to continuous professional growth and professional learning Proven ability to motivate students through meaningful curriculum and inquiry-driven learning Demonstrated ability to develop strong learning relationships through the provision of a safe and trusting learning environment Experience using project-based learning approaches and commitment to regularly engage in experiential learning opportunities with students Familiarity with relevant assessment strategies to provide continual feedback Demonstrated ability to effectively differentiate and be responsive to student needs Experience, sensitivity and awareness of working within a multicultural environment Willingness to embrace the ethos of an independent school and make a commitment to the extensive co-curricular life of an independent school Preference will be given to candidates who also have the following skills and qualifications: Canadian Certified Counsellor designation or equivalent Membership in good standing in the BC School Counsellors' Association (BCSCA) or similar Provincial Specialist Association of Teacher-Counsellors professional group Standard First Aid Certification or above Please apply online - www.qms.bc.ca by clicking on Careers.
