The successful applicant is required to be available on a casual on-call basis, to cover vacation and sick leave, or unexpected work volume. This position is primarily shift work with work hours occurring during the days, nights and on weekends. A suitable applicant would be physically able to work 12-hour shifts and be flexible with availability where there would be long periods without work or very little and other times where full-time coverage would be required. This union position is open to all female and male applicants and will be subject to a full security screening. Nature Of PositionThis is a custodial position responsible for the welfare, safety and security of prisoners confined as outlined by the RCMP Operations Policy and the Quesnel Detachment Post Orders. The main duties associated with the position relate to the admitting, guarding, and releasing of prisoners, cleaning and maintenance of the cell block area, performing basic office duties (including monthly written and computer reports and statistics) record keeping, runs prisoner profile on CPIC, and prisoner meal preparation. Exposure to emotionally upset persons, possibly of a dangerous nature is to be expected, in addition to frequent verbal abuse from the prisoners. Duties:Conducts cell checks before and after lockupAs required, completes booking forms in relation to detainees' incarceration and releaseMaintains register log records of date and time prisoners are brought in and time of releaseChecks and secures prisoners' effects; checks and returns same at time of releaseAssists with or prepares booking-in documents on CABS for regular memberAssists members in fingerprinting and photocopying of prisonersPrepares manual or CABS photograph line-ups of suspects for regular membersWhen required, performs body searches on same-sex prisonersConducts regular surveillance of prisonersAssists member to meet prisoner privileges: i.e. showers, visitors and telephone callsMaintains log on prisoner activity, i.e. phone calls, visitorsSupplies toiletries, reading material and extra blankets as necessaryRecords and reports all incidents or occurrences by the prisoner while incarceratedKeeps records on: Prisoners, Surveillance tapes, CABS Photo database, Food, StationaryResponds to telephone inquiries from Sheriffs, Court Liaison, other DetachmentsPrepares meals from supplies three times daily: order salad supplement when requiredMaintains cell block area, cells, office in a clean and sanitary condition and requisitions cleaning supplies when stock reaches re-order levelsArranges for laundry pickup and deliveryWhen there are no prisoners, assists with record filing and front counter complaintsRuns prisoner profile on CPICPerforms other related duties as required Required Qualifications Education and ExperienceAt a minimum, the incumbent must possess the following qualifications:Grade 12 education or GED equivalentFederal RCMP Security Clearance, or the ability to obtain and maintain thisPossess a valid First Aid Certificate and CPR CertificateMinimum of one (1) year experience with Windows based computer programsWorking knowledge of security practice and/or related RCMP departmental experience and knowledge as a Guard or in a police-related positionMinimum of one (1) year experience with Windows based computer programs Skills and AbilitiesAbility to learn computer based record keepingAbility to communicate effectively in EnglishAbility to understand and follow written and oral instructions and work independentlyGood interpersonal skills, and be able to maintain a good working relationship with other employees and membersTact, courteous, diplomatic and persuasive skills in dealing with difficult and sensitive situationsMust be alert, calm and collected in an emergency situation, and physically fit to handle all required duties of the position that demands physical effortMust have tolerance and patience when dealing with inebriated and unruly personsMust be able to maintain a high level of confidentialityMust be physically capable of and available to work 12 hour shift pattern including evenings, nights and weekends.
