Residential Support Worker 
RESIDENTIAL SUPPORT WORKER The Campbell River and District Association for Community Living is responsible for the operation of several permanent residential services; 5 in Campbell River, 1 in Oyster River and 1 in Comox. All of the homes have unique characteristics but share a caring, supportive environment to help the residents achieve their optimum level of independence. The Residential Support Worker works as a member of a team responsible for assisting the residents with activities of daily living, personal care and to provide opportunities to promote independence and self-actualization. The Residential Support Worker is responsible for introducing and implementing ideas and activities that will increase the resident s independence and social skills. As the residential group homes are open all hours every day of the week, the hours of work for the position include awake nightshifts. Casual employees are required to be available for at least 2 overnight awake shifts per week. There are also positions that require morning and afternoon alternating shifts. Duties and Responsibilities Performs administrative duties including but not limited to, writing in and reviewing activities in daily log books, expense recording and preparing log books for the next month, recording in communication books and medical/dental log books, maintaining and updating resident's files. Administers medications and records medication dispensing information in accordance with established protocols. Follows directions in Health Care Plans, and all Physicians orders regarding each resident. Responds to all personal care requirements regarding each resident. Includes each resident in meal preparation and clean-up, where appropriate, and assists each resident with eating at meal and snack times. Provides each resident with socialization and life skills training, and acts as a role model for acceptable and appropriate behavior. Completes cleaning and laundry tasks on a daily basis maintaining all health and safety standards. Compiles the weekly grocery list, and may be responsible for the grocery shopping, as required. Participates in program planning, development and implementation for each resident. Develops individual activity plans for each resident Participates with all residents in all scheduled activities including swimming. Assumes the responsibilities of being a key worker or day programmer for an individual resident as assigned. Prepares semi-annual progress reports on each resident's health and well-being, as assigned Summarizes client banking on a monthly basis, as assigned Attends day programming, staff meetings and Personal Service Planning (P.S.P.) meetings, as required. Follow all behavioral plans and strategies in place to deal with violent and/or aggressive behaviors. Supports resident s inclusion within their own family. Supports resident s in developing relationships with others outside the group home. Fosters resident s integration into the neighbourhood and the community at large. Performs duties in a manner that supports an effective team environment. Ensures the safety of each resident in the program when lifting and transferring; and the loading and unloading of wheelchairs on and off the van (s). Participates on various Association Committees, to include, but not limited to: OSH, EFAP and Medication Safety Committees. Ensures the safe evacuation of all group home staff and residents in case of fire drills or other emergencies and ensures all individuals are accounted for. Ensures familiarity with and abides by the Community Care Assisted Living Act, Adult Care Regulations and CRADACL policies and procedures. Performs other related duties, as required. JOB QUALIFICATIONS Requirements Valid Class IV Driver's License (UPON 90 DAYS OF HIRING), Current First Aid and CPR certification Negative T.B. test clearance Physician s Approval of Health. Food Safe Level 1 Certification Non Violent Crisis Intervention Clear and current Driver s Abstract Consent to a Provincial Criminal Record Check Qualifications Human Services Worker Certification or certification in a relevant field. Three to six month prior job experience (paid or volunteer), working with people with developmental disabilities. Have previous experience working with people with dual diagnosis and challenging and/or aggressive behaviour an asset. Exhibit a proven ability to calmly and effectively work with challenging and aggressive behaviour. Must display an understanding and ability to work with individuals with mental disability and mental illness. Possess the enthusiasm and energy to be a contributing team member. Basic computer skills required. Must be physically fit, willing and able to meet all physical demands of the job. Must be able to swim on a regular basis.
