Job Summary The Functional Lead plays an essential role in the software development lifecycle, being accountable at a functional level, to supervise the end-to-end realization of solutions envisioned by the architects. This pivotal position must ensure a consistent understanding of the solution amongst all team members, acting as a master of solution delivery between the roles of solution architecture, business analysis, design, development, technology integration, quality testing and project management. To be concise, the Functional Lead is the master of the complete solution delivery between all the players. They master the end-to-end solution and lead design decisions, solution integration and overall solution implementation. The Functional Lead is accountable to materialize and deliver the proposed solution architecture and anticipated business value. They work closely with Business and *IT stakeholders during the planning phase to define the various functional components and all integration points of the solution. They assist in planning the delivery of the solution, identifying task components, dependencies, and sequencing of activities across the various involved teams. Furthermore, they will support functional designers and overview the design documentation process, according to best practices, with the proper level of documentation details. The Functional Lead manages solution barriers, mitigates risks and escalates architecture changes. They ensure that all pieces of the solution in scope are properly tested and that business requirements have been satisfied. They provide guidance and leadership to the functional team(s) and leverages team member s individual expertise to contribute to the achievement of the project objective. Finally, the Functional Lead determines conversion strategy and collaborates with IT stakeholders to coordinate overall conversions, cutover, implementation, and stabilization activities. * IT Stakeholders: Designers (application, data, UX), Architects (solution, information, technology), Business Analyst, Project Manager, Developer, Tester, Infrastructure, Technology Integrator, ETIS, Security, Promo, Business Warehouse and BI, APM Major Responsibilities List the job s key tasks and responsibilities in order of importance. Most jobs have three to five major responsibilities. Please specify the approximate amount of time (e.g. 50%) spent on each: Understand Collaborate with Business, Architects and Designers (UX/data), to understand business objectives and purpose of the future application Supports requirements gathering and architecture shaping Perform research to understand As Is application(s) (when applicable) and architecture artifacts Perform research and get familiar with commercial package chosen (when applicable) Understand integration points between, front-end, backend and satellite systems and highlight potential solution delivery risks 2. Explore Collaborate with UX, application and data designers to understand individual pieces and component of the solution design Collaborate with other IT stakeholder and vendors to understand integration points Envision and identify application components required to deliver the full integrated solution Ensure all the pieces of the solution have been thought thru and that the solution respects the agreed architecture Collaborate with Business and Data Designers to define data conversion strategy Collaborate with Quality Assurance to build-up strategies and overall integration testing requirements Work closely with all teams involved (including vendors) in defining and planning the delivery of the solution 3. Materialize Oversee application design activities (including vendor s) Lead design sessions and overall design decisions Advocate standardization and design patterns Work closely with IT Stakeholders (including vendors) in removing any solution barriers, translate the impact of these barriers to the project leadership, and manage and mitigate the associated risks Escalate potential architecture changes or change in scope Review and approve functional design documents and ensure consistency of documentation an integrated solution Coordinate solution activities among all the different teams involved Ensure that all requirements and integration failure points have been met through testing activities Finalize and lead conversion activity in collaboration with Business and Data Designer Collaborate to the preparation and coordination the full Implementation Plan Ensures solution is stable in production and properly transferred to core Master the end-to-end solution and act as the go-to person for any question related to the solution in scope for delivery Oversee support requests and ensure integrity of the long-term solution Ensure the solution follows the standard support procedures Ensure solution is stable and sustainable in Production Environment 4. Govern Assist in defining design standards, maintaining/evolving governance, and foundational best practices (i.e., design patterns, design principles.) Maintain the currency of the design documentation Analyze and evaluate design documentation and solution decomposition and improve based on lessons learns and best practice Assist in defining data modeling standards, and foundational best practices Collaborate in the elaboration of long-term vision to move toward interactive design and Design Thinking Share knowledge and work method to build-up future potential Functional Lead Skills / Functional Knowledge: Indicate below the minimum specific skills and/or knowledge required to perform the job: Strong communication skills - communicate well with technical and nontechnical audience and at all levels ( IT, business ) Solid experience with software development lifecycle process Strong problem-solving skills Strong organization skills Ability to multi-task Creative, innovator and strong analytical skills Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks Proactive approach Experienced in leading and managing other people Ability to deal with external CN vendors Experienced in application design and business requirements gathering Process driven and able to turn strategy into tactical actionable tasks. Education / Certification / Experience: Indicate below the minimum education, certification and/or experience required to perform the job: Bachelor or Technical degree in Computer sciences, Software Engineering, or Information technology Minimum of 7-12 years of relevant experience in software engineering lifecycle process Experience with software development lifecycle process Familiar with API Management platforms such as APIGee (preferred), WSO2, SwaggerHub, Mashery or others Experience with API concepts and technologies such as REST, JSON, XML, SOAP, YAML, and Swagger Experience with Business requirement gathering process Experience with Data modeling Strong knowledge in technical and functional specifications using flowcharting, sequence diagrams, or any other UML pattern needed. Experience in leading a team in the context of a project lifecycle (waterfall and agile/hybrid agile) Bilingualism with high proficiency in English (spoken and written) Decision Making: Describe the typical independent authority this job has to make decisions or take actions, without prior approval from a direct supervisor, including the nature of the decision and impact: The Functional Lead may need to work independently with little supervision. He has the authority to make decisions or take action on: Project deliverables dependencies Design options evaluation and decision maker Defining detail solution by approving solution blueprint documents and software engineering functional designs Re-arrange priorities according to the current situation keeping in mind the milestones and deadlines of the project Adjusting technical approach of an application component if foreseeing high risks on delivering a non-stable solution Adjusting testing strategy when required Acting as central escalation point for solution design About CN CN is a world-class transportation leader and trade-enabler.
