EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Silviculture/Planning Technician Burns Lake Community Forest Ltd., the Lakes District s community-owned forest corporation, is seeking a forest professional to support and develop all aspects of forest operations of the Burns Lake Community Forest. The community forest was developed on the following founding principle: the community forest is for the benefit of all residents of the community as a whole. Burns Lake Community Forest encompasses approximately 92,000ha in and around the Village of Burns Lake. Burns Lake Community Forest is one of the largest operationally active community forests in BC. Burns Lake is located in the heart of northern British Columbia, about 222 km west of Prince George on Highway 16. The village has a diverse population of 3,614 residents and serves a surrounding area of approximately 10,000 residents of the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako. There are six local First Nations communities with an approximate population of 3,332, and two of the six local First Nations communities are within municipal boundaries. Burns Lake has a strong sense of culture and incredible local talent to showcase. This is an excellent opportunity to implement your natural resources skills and learn something new. Reporting to the General Manager, the position is responsible for supporting all aspects of forest operations, project management and contract implementation. Although, the primary areas of focus will be forest development planning and silviculture. The position will have a broad scope of forest practices and excellent opportunity for professional development. The position is expected to coordinate, prepare, monitor, develop and evaluate day to day and long-term strategic focus of the community forest. At the strategic level: Implement COMFOR Management Services Ltd. s operational safety, environmental and forest certification programs and ensuring compliance with plans and government regulations Ensure compliance with FSC Certification Implement Forest Stewardship Plan, Management Plan #4 and subsequent operational plans: Access Management, Landscape Fire Management Support GIS Analyst in five- and 10-year development planning Developing the group certificate program for FSC certification At the operational level: Oversees all phases of silviculture activities from initial planning and sowing to contract administration Supporting GIS Analysts in silviculture corporate data maintenance in Phoenix Connect Completing RESULTS reporting and submissions Completing post-harvest site assessments for reforestation prescriptions, planting supervision, site prep supervision, supervision and implementation of silviculture surveys assessment Supporting Area Supervisor in forest operations; forest development, harvesting, hauling, post-harvest obligation Supports special projects and community initiatives Supports annual budget cycle and development of work schedules Supports annual reporting requirements To be successful at this appointment you need to demonstrate a positive attitude, have the ability to work in the office and in field environments and demonstrate competence in forest operations and planning. You will have acquired these skills through a minimum of five-seven (5-7) years related and progressive experience in the forest sector with a forest professional designation: RPF or RFT. A lesser qualified applicant may be appointed at the lower level. You must be legally entitled to work in Canada. This position is a full-time position.
